If I could count the number of times I've played this song and someone has come up to me either looking like I've sung their story or they've eaten a lemon - - it's a weird song. And here's why I wrote it.
Faith is so compelling, lovely, and difficult. It is the foundation upon which we build love, trust, hope, and goodness. And it ain't easy. Faith is indeed that flying leap, simply believing that there is a net, never having seen it. But we're not fools. We don't jump into the fire certain that we won't be burned. Well, some of us do.
There are organizations that practice the most amazing faith, the most giving, encouraging, and passionate forms of healing through the spirit. And then there are organizations that grossly misuse this idea, forcing the hands of would-be believers into cages of confused and agitated rattle snakes, asking a person swayed into a state of ecstatic frenzy to come forth and perform acts of great danger in the name of God. Sometimes, these acts are successful, and attributed to the great faith of the practitioner. Other times, people are injured badly or killed, this being attributed to the lack of faith within. Oh, dear. No, no, no. Many religious groups still practice in this way. Bear witness to it once and it will leave you sickened and intrigued and haunted. It did me, and it opened a part of my heart that harbors faith and love, and draws a distinct line between belief and sensibility. Belief is spiritual and must propel right action, not be taunted and tested in dangerous human capacity. I believe that the healing power of people combined with God's will is astounding. Let not a darkness take over this precious source within and think of ways to test our mortality. I cannot condemn anyone for their beliefs, only put myself there and write a song about it. Well, here's the way I feel about it. One gal's view. Hope you like it.
